நண்டும் தூய சவேரியாரும் (Saint Francis Xavier and the Crab):

பதினாறாம் நூற்றாண்டில் தூய சவேரியார் நான்கு முறை மலாக்கா தீவுக்கு சென்றார். அப்படி ஒருமுறை அவர் மலாக்கா தீவுக்கு சென்ற போது கடலில் ஒரு பெரிய புயல் உருவாகி அவர் சென்று கொண்டிருந்த படகை மூழ்கடிக்க முயற்ச்சித்தது. அப்போது சவேரியார் தன்னுடைய கையில் வைத்திருந்த இயேசு கிறிஸ்துவின் பாடுபட்ட சிலுவையை தனது கைகளில் உயர்த்தி பிடித்து செபிக்க தொடங்கினார். அவரது செபத்தின் வல்லமையால் புயல் அடங்கியது. ஆனால் துரதிஷ்டவசமாக சவேரியாரின் கையில் இருந்த பாடுபட்ட சிலுவை கடலில் விழுந்து அமிழ்ந்தது. சவேரியார் கலக்கமுற்றார்.

மறுநாள் சவேரியாருக்கு ஒரு அதிசயம் காத்திருந்தது. நண்டு ஓன்று தன்னுடைய இடுக்கு கைகளில் சவேரியார் கடலில் தொலைத்த இயேசுவின் பாடுபட்ட சிலுவையை பிடித்துக் கொண்டு வந்தது. இதைக் கண்ட தூய சவேரியார் எல்லையற்ற மகிழ்ச்சி அடைந்தார். சிலுவையை பெற்றுக் கொண்ட சவேரியார், மகிழ்ச்சி பொங்க அந்த நண்டை ஆசீர்வதித்து அதன் முதுகில் சிலுவை வரைந்தார்.

அந்த இனத்து நண்டுகளின் முதுகில் இன்றளவும் அந்த சிலுவை அடையாளம் உள்ளது என்பது வியக்கத்தக்கதாகும். அதுமட்டுமில்லாமல் மலாக்கா தீவுகளில் இந்த இன நண்டுகள் இன்றளவும் உள்ளன. இங்குள்ள மீன்பிடி தொழில் செய்பவர்கள் இந்த இன நண்டுகளை புனிதமாக கருதுகின்றனர். அவற்றை பிடிப்பதோ உணவுக்கு பயன்படுத்துவதோ கிடையாது என்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.

Francis Xavier visited Malacca four times in the 16th Century. On one of his visits, lost his crucifix at sea when he calmed the water during a heavy storm.

Francis was travelling from one island to the next in the natives' boats and on a particular day a big storm developed that nearly capsized his boat. He held onto his crucifix and said a prayer. Then he dipped the crucifix into the rough sea, which immediately calmed down the storm winds. Unfortunately, his crucifix fell to the bottom of the sea. No one perished in the storm.

The next day, he was surprised to see a crab crawling up the beach holding his crucifix in its claws. With great joy he picked up the crucifix and blessed the crab, and the crab disappeared in the calm sea. On the shell of this species of crab, there is a distinct sign of the cross. They are still found in the Straits of Malacca today. Portuguese fisherman believe they are holy and will not eat them.

A Portuguese gunner, Fausta Rodrigues, was an eye-witness to this incident and wrote it down in his diary, which is on display in the National Museum of Lisbon. In the Chapel of the Royal Place, Madrid, Spain, the crucifix with the scratching of the crab's claws is on display.
